All research groups in the SoE have a single Laboratory Safety Guidebook, a compilation of all* safety documentation required by WorksafeBC and UBC Policy. A hard copy of this Guidebook must always be present in the research lab. The Guidebook contains several mandatory documents including:
- The research group’s lab specific orientation document, to be signed by all lab members after being trained by a senior lab member on the orientation. A copy of the sign-off of this is required in the lab access form for new members to gain Salto access.
- *The research laboratory’s monthly self inspection, to be signed monthly by the faculty lead or senior lab member after looking through the lab and ensuring nominal operation.
- Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) of frequently performed procedures or equipment operation with notable hazards, signed off by all individuals performing each respective SOP.
- UBC Canvas training records of all lab members.
- *Safety Data Sheets of all hazardous materials and chemicals in the lab space. The SDS sheets must be reviewed every 3 years.
* Some of these documents may be located elsewhere in the lab space, but not outside of it.
