Many researchers in the School of Engineering welcome volunteer students in their labs. This is a great opportunity for students to get involved with research, enhance their undergraduate experience and add valuable experience to their resume. UBC has the obligation to provide a safe working environment for all volunteers, and follow WorkSafe BC guidelines.
Working in a research lab is not without risk and it is important for the volunteers to understand the hazards of the lab and complete all required training. Volunteers are trained in the same manner as staff and graduate students. Volunteer insurance is mandatory and Principal Investigator or Lab manager is required to contact insurance.ubc@ubc.ca with the filled-out Accident Insurance Registration form . There is no cost for volunteer insurance and duration of insurance should match the duration for which the volunteer will be working in the lab. Extensions can be obtained by emailing insurance.ubc@ubc.ca a new Accident Insurance Registration form.
Once Insurance is in place, lab access can be requested. Section 12 on the lab access form should be the same date as the end date of insurance. Email Praveen Rajan with insurance confirmation email and all the required documentation for lab access.
