Health Safety and Environment coordinates all waste disposal through their Hazardous Materials Management system. HSE has developed a flow chart to assist in determining the appropriate form of disposal.
Chemical Waste, Liquid
- Fill out waste tag: chemical waste tag
- Start with largest component first writing full name of chemical
- Indicate % composition (not Molar concentrations)
- eg. 80% methanol, 15% water, 5% ethanol with traces of gold (must add up to 100%)
- Submit waste request through the Hazardous Waste Inventory System
Things to remember:
- Ensure all waste is properly labeled
- Indicate room and location of pickup in waste inventory system
- Print off and attach waste authorization form which is emailed to you once your waste request has been accepted
Chemically Contaminated Waste, Solid
- Place solid waste in pail provided by HSE
- No liquids
- No powders. Powders must be sealed in a ziploc bag prior to disposal
- No sharps
- Submit waste request through the Hazardous Waste Inventory System
Solid Chemical Waste
- For chemicals no longer needed consider donating the chemical to the chemical exchange program
- For expired chemicals or chemicals which require disposal leave in original container
- Submit waste request through the Hazardous Waste Inventory System
Biological Waste
Fill out waste tag: biological waste tag
- Pathological material (uncontaminated)
- Risk Group 1 (RG1) contaminated material
- Risk Group 2 (RG2) contaminated material
- Contaminated Pathological Material
- Biomedical (human) material
- Submit waste request through the Hazardous Waste Inventory System
Glass Waste
- Segregate contaminated glass from clean glass waste and place in appropriate bucket provided by HSE
- Chemically contaminated solid waste – blue bucket
- Clean glass waste – green bucket
- Contaminated glass waste – white bucket
- Submit waste request through the Hazardous Waste Inventory System
Sharps
- Place all sharps in approved sharps container
- Submit waste request through the Hazardous Waste Inventory System
